Cart is empty After 10 years it was time to renew a bit the range of accessories I have in my catalog.
Partly out of passion, partly out of experience, because I have been making not only large format cameras but also wet collodion holders of all formats used by me and by countless photographers all over the world for almost 10 years, and it is because of this passion that I want to start this renewal phase from this very product.
Therefore, the time has come to introduce the 3rd generation of Stenopeika’s high-quality wet collodion holders.
Why high quality?
Because to make these holders I use only noble materials that, with accumulated experience, make me say with certainty that the materials I have chosen for these holders are the most suitable to be in contact with the chemical agents protagonists of this discipline, namely pvc and aluminum.
Starting with the front, you can see that it is made of aluminum, ditto the dark slide, while the central body and the back cover are made of PVC, which I assure you, is absolutely the best material to be in contact with silver nitrate and to be washed after every use.
Also, in the case of the Stenopeika wet collodion holders, they are all machined from solid, yes from solid, no 3d printing, because I want this product to be eternal and not a toy, maybe with some seepage or smudging.
Having done this excursus on the materials used, let’s go into more detail of how it was designed and especially what are the differences and equalities with the previous model.
Let’s start with the two equalities, the black slide and the very comfortable top grip have remained the same as the previous model, why?
The choice of aluminum provides the rigidity necessary not to scratch the emulsion during opening and closing.
The grip, on the other hand, has remained nice and big because when you are working with gloves on and you are in the process of shooting, I think it is much more useful to have an easy-to-grip and handy opening and closing system, so you don’t have to focus on anything other than the composition.
Another detail that has remained the same as the previous version is the aluminum front that restores rigidity to everything else in the structure.
The loading system from the rear has also remained unchanged, the first version, back in 2014, involved loading the plate from the front, with two tabs that went to block the plate touching the emulsion, the holder worked, however with direct experience I realized that loading from the rear is definitely the more convenient choice, and so I left this system also in this generation of holders.
What changes a lot from the previous version is the opening system of the rear cover, in fact in this new generation of holder the hinges, present in the previous version, have disappeared and have been replaced with magnets, let me explain better.
Also in the previous generation of holders, the mark 2, there were magnets that allowed the closure of the back cover, however I had preferred to add stainless steel locking tabs to prevent accidental opening, in the current version the tabs tabs are no longer there and the closure is left only and exclusively to the magnets, which of course have grown in number to prevent accidental opening.
Obviously this means that the back cover is independent of the main body, with the advantage that it can be washed more easily.
As you can see opening and closing the back cover is very easy, the magnets offer really excellent opening resistance, and the volet is easy to pull out and insert again.
Since this is an 11×14 model, I also made a reduction to the 8×10 size.
As you can see thanks to the two springs placed on the back, there is no need to lock the reduction, which makes it very easy to use.
The reduction is also made of pvc, so it is completely washable like the whole holder.
Obviously this new system will also be implemented on the more common 4×5, 5×7 and 8×10 formats, if you order a holder in these formats today you will receive it in mark 3 version, like this one.

Dopo 10 anni era arrivato il momento di rinnovare un po’ la gamma di accessori che ho in catalogo.
Un po’ per passione, un po’ per esperienza, perchè sono quasi 10 anni che, oltre a realizzare fotocamere di grande formato, realizzo anche holder per collodio umido di tutti i formati utilizzati da me e da innumerevoli fotografi in tutto il mondo, ed è proprio a causa di questa passione che voglio cominciare questa fase di rinnovamento proprio da questo prodotto.
E’ giunto dunque il momento di presentarvi la 3a generazione degli holder per collodio umido di alta qualità Stenopeika.
Perchè di alta qualità?
Perchè per realizzare questi holder utilizzo solo materiali nobili che, con l’esperienza accumulata, mi fanno dire con certezza che i materiali che ho scelto per questi holder sono i più adatti a stare a contatto con gli agenti chimici protagonisti di questa disciplina, ovvero pvc e alluminio.
Partendo dal frontale potete notare che è in alluminio, idem il dark slide, mentre il corpo centrale e il coperchio posteriore sono in PVC, che vi assicuro, è in assoluto il miglior materiale per stare a contatto con i nitrato d’argento e per essere lavato dopo ogni utilizzo.
Inoltre, nel caso degli holder per collodio umido Stenopeika, sono tutti ricavati dal pieno, sì dal pieno, niente stampa 3d, perché voglio che questo prodotto sia eterno e non un giocattolo, magari con qualche infiltrazione o sbavatura.
Fatto questo excursus sui materiali utilizzati, scendiamo più nel dettaglio di come è stato pensato e soprattutto quali sono le differenze e le uguaglianze con il precedente modello.
Partiamo dalle due uguaglianze, il black slide e la presa superiore, molto comoda, sono rimasti uguali al precedente modello, perché?
La scelta dell’alluminio garantisce la rigidità necessaria per non graffiare l’emulsione durante le fasi apertura e chiusura.
La presa invece è rimasta bella grande perchè quando lavori con i guanti e sei in fase di ripresa, ritengo sia molto più utile avere un sistema di apertura e chiusura facile impugnare e a portata di mano, così non devi concentrarti su nient’altro che non sia la composizione.
Altro particolare rimasto uguale alla precedente versione è il frontale in alluminio che restituisce rigidità a tutto il resto della struttura.
E’ rimasto invariato anche il sistema di caricamento dal dietro, la prima versione, nel lontano 2014, prevedeva il caricamento della lastra dalla parte frontale, con due linguette che andavano a bloccare la lastra toccando l’emulsione, lo holder funzionava, però con l’esperienza diretta mi sono accorto che il caricamento dal posteriore è sicuramente la scelta più comoda, e così ho lasciato questo sistema anche in questa generazione di holder.
Quello che cambia molto dalla versione precedente è il sistema di apertura del coperchio posteriore, infatti in questa nuova generazione di holder sono scomparse le cerniere, presenti nella precedente versione, sostituite con i magneti, mi spiego meglio.
Anche nella precedente generazione di holder, la mark 2, c’erano dei magneti che consentivano la chiusura del coperchio posteriore, però avevo preferito aggiungere delle linguette di blocco in acciaio inox per evitare aperture accidentali, nella versione attuale le linguette linguette non ci sono più e la chiusura è lasciata solo ed esclusivamente ai magneti, che ovviamente sono cresciuti in numero per evitare un’apertura accidentale.
Ovviamente questo comporta che il coperchio posteriore sia indipendente dal corpo principale, con il vantaggio di poter essere lavato più facilmente.
Come potete vedere l’apertura e la chiusura del coperchio posteriore è molto facile, i magneti offrono una resistenza all’apertura davvero eccellente, e il volet è facile da estrarre e inserire di nuovo.
Essendo questo un modello 11×14, ho realizzato anche una riduzione al formato 8×10.
Come potete notare grazie alle due molle piazzate sul posteriore, non c’è bisogno di bloccare la riduzione, il chè rende il tutto facilissimo da utilizzare.
Anche la riduzione è realizzata in pvc, quindi completamente lavabile come tutto lo holder.
Ovviamente questo nuovo sistema verrà implementato anche sui formati più comuni 4×5, 5×7 e 8×10, se ordinate oggi uno holder in questi formati lo riceverete in versione mark 3, come questo.
